What You'll Need
- A decent bag or basket (nothing fancy, a tote will do)
- A small pocket knife or scissors
- A basic field guide or plant ID app on your phone
- Weather-appropriate clothing (this is Manchester, after all)
The Golden Rules
- Only take what you know – If you're not 100% certain what it is, leave it be. No exceptions.
- Never strip an area – Take only what you need and never more than 1/3 of what's available.
- Respect protected areas – Some spaces are conservation areas where foraging isn't allowed.
- Stay away from busy roads – Plants near heavy traffic absorb pollutants.
- Wash everything thoroughly – Urban foraging means being extra careful about cleanliness.
Seasonal First Picks
For your first foraging adventures, try these foolproof finds:
- Spring: Wild garlic, nettles, dandelions
- Summer: Elderflowers, blackberries, cherries
- Autumn: Apples, rosehips, hazelnuts
- Winter: Pine needles for tea, winter greens like chickweed
Start small, build your confidence, and remember – the foraging community is here to help. Pop along to one of our guided walks to learn from experienced foragers who know Manchester's green spaces like the back of their hand.
Come as you are, you're welcome here – even if you can't tell your dock leaves from your dandelions just yet.
